Director - Professor Mark Fitzgerald ASM

Professor Mark Fitzgerald has led the establishment of trauma reception, resuscitation and management programs along with Trauma Systems development in Australia, China, India, Myanmar, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka. He is co-chair of the Australian New Zealand Trauma Registry. Professor Fitzgerald is also the Director of the National Trauma Research Institute and Director of Trauma Services at The Alfred, recognised internationally for his clinical research in trauma systems development, clinical care of the severely injured and error reduction and the standardisation of resuscitation care. He is a National Health Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Leadership Fellow. Professor Fitzgerald's credentials include MB BS (University of Melbourne) 1981; Fellowship Australasian College for Emergency Medicine 1987; MD (Monash) 2015 (Computer Assisted Decisions Support for Trauma Resuscitation); and Global Clinical Scholar - Epidemiology and Biostatistics 2015 (Harvard Medical School). He is an Ambulance Victoria Medical Advisor, a Victorian State Trauma Committee member and the Director of the Trauma Reception & Resuscitation Project. Professor Fitzgerald has been an Ambulance Victoria Medical Advisor since 1989 and is a member of the Victorian State Trauma Committee. He was awarded the Ambulance Service Medal (ASM), Australia Day Honours (2003); the Foundation Medal, Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (2003), Honorary Life Membership of the Neurotrauma Society of India (2010); and the Gordon Trinca Medal, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (2013). Professor Fitzgerald’s research themes include trauma systems development, clinical care of the severely injured, error reduction, biomedical device design and the standardisation of resuscitation care. The development of semi-automated, computer–assisted resuscitation is a career goal. He has delivered 185 major presentations, 350 publications in peer-review journals, 14 book chapters and is a reviewer for multiple medical and surgical journals.

Snr. Partner - Associate Professor Joseph K. Mathew

Associate Professor Joseph K. Mathew is a leader in trauma care and research, currently serving as the Deputy Director of Trauma Services at Alfred Health, Australasia’s largest trauma service, where he drives excellence in clinical care delivery. He also holds the position of Head of International Programs,South Asia at the National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI), leading transformative initiatives in trauma system development across Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, China, and Saudi Arabia. Notably, he served as the Australian lead for the highly successful Australia-India Trauma System Collaboration. A/Prof Mathew is a pioneer in trauma education, having founded and co-created several impactful programs including; Cadaveric Trauma Procedures Course, Emergency Trauma Management (ETM) Course and Trauma Team Training Program. He is also a co-creator of innovative mobility applications supporting prehospital care and trauma rehabilitation. A/Prof Mathew has been honoured with the Clinical Excellence Award by the Australia and New Zealand Trauma Society for his outstanding contributions to trauma care. A/Prof Mathew’s multidisciplinary expertise, spanning clinical leadership, AI driveninnovation, and global trauma system development, positions him as one of the leaders in advancing trauma clinical care and research.
